K-Os Bio
Kheaven Brereton (born Kevin Brereton,
February 20, 1972 in Port
of Spain, Trinidad) is a Canadian
musician from Toronto, Ontario who records and performs as k-os. His
music is frequently compared to Lauryn Hill because of his ability to harmonize
and emcee. His stage name is pronounced "chaos", and is an acronym for
"knowledge of self."
In 2003, K-Os was nominated for a Juno Award in
both Rap Recording of the Year and
New Artist of the Year categories, and
managed to pick up an "International Album of the Year" at the Source
Awards. The following year, Don Allen was nominated in the Video of the Year
category for his work on the "Heaven Only Knows" video. He also
featured on a new song by The Chemical Brothers song called "Get Yourself
High" on their Singles 93-03 complilation that year. His 2004 album,
Joyful Rebellion, had the highest chart debut for a Canadian
hip hop
album in the history of the Canadian record charts. This album included the hit
singles "Crabbuckit", "B-Boy Stance" and "Man I Used to
Be". In 2005, he won three Juno Awards: Single of the Year for "Crabbuckit",
Rap Record of the Year for "Joyful Rebellion", and Video of the Year
for "B-Boy Stance".
His music is a colourful mix of hip
hop, rock,
pop, jazz,
and reggae.
Unlike most other hip-hop artists, K-OS is accompanied by live musicians during
his public performances. He also plays the guitar, piano and other instruments
in many of his songs.
